Cleanup decision reached for contaminated site in historically Black Upstate neighborhood
Summary
In June 2025, WYFF reported that state environmental officials had selected a cleanup remedy for the contaminated Bramlett Road site near Newtown and Mountain View Baptist Church. The decision followed sustained advocacy by our church, neighborhood residents and the South Carolina Environmental Law Project and included removal of the illegal landfill and contaminated sediment, along with monitoring and restoration measures.
This was an important step toward environmental justice for a community that has lived with pollution for far too long. A safe environment is essential to the future envisioned in the Newtown Master Plan, and we remain committed to working with residents and partners as the cleanup moves from a decision on paper to meaningful action on the ground.
